PRIVATE STAMP ISSUES |
PRIVATE ISSUES
In an effort to increase their revenue from
the public more and more Postal Authorities* are promoting the issue of
“Personalised Stamps”.
These usually consist of two parts.
1.The revenue is earned by using a postally valid stamp, which is joined -
usually by perforation - to another label.
2.This attached label may
consist of a design, image or photograph supplied the individual,
organisation or Company who wishes to celebrate a birthday, anniversary
or special event.
The British Royal Mail version of this type of issue is known as
“SMILERS” and for a sum of approximately twice face value, sheets of 20
First Class stamps, plus the extra label can be ordered.
Apart from certain specifications regarding Copyright as well as
non-embarrassing subjects, the design of the label is pretty well wide
open for choice.
Each contract is between the Postal Authority and the applicant and no
public knowledge is made available - this means that the items produced
are not available to the general public. If, subsequently they are
placed on the market then any price may be charged, and experience shows
that this has usually been excessive.
These PRIVATE ISSUES will, wherever we are able, be announced, together
with whatever details we can find out. But be warned, this could take
some time after the date of issue and we will have no knowledge as to
whether dealers carry stocks - so you may find them extremely elusive,
IF YOU WISH TO COLLECT THEM AT ALL!!
*To date PRIVATE ISSUES have been made by
the following Postal Authorities:
AUSTRALIA: AUSTRIA: CANADA: GREAT BRITAIN:
NEW ZEALAND: SOUTH AFRICA.
Please keep us informed if you hear of more
issues in the future.

ASSOCIATED STAMPS are
those which are issued by Bona-fide Postal Authorities around the world,
but whose CRICKET theme is not readily apparent - serious enthusiasts
have researched the subject and found interesting "Associations" with
the game, which are usually explained in the text.
{NOTE: Because so
many issued stamps can be "Associated" with CRICKET, indirectly, or in
some cases, obtusely, these items listed below give details ONLY as a
reference, of issues previously discovered or researched by
"ENTHUSIASTS". It is up to each individual collector to decide how far
to go in the definition of "Associated" stamps - otherwise you may run
the risk of lining the pockets of unscrupulous dealers or agents
who may find a way of "unloading" material onto a market which collects
"everything". It is your choice!}

This was the first-ever COMMERCIAL PRIVATE arranged through Royal Mail and the MCC - with "The ASHES" tab
on 3 of a set of 5 "Occasions" stamps - all fully valid for postal use.
There were two photographs of the Urn - and in some confusion the wrong
photograph was used for the first printing. The first day of use for
this issue was the Saturday of the 1st ASHES TEST match at Edgbaston.

For the second printing, to replenish
stocks, the correct photograph of the urn was used, thus creating TWO
varieties.
